At today's press reception in Bonn Chancellor Angela Merkel highlighted the importance of biodiversity for humans and the economy. Furthermore she accented the pioneering role of Germany. To put an end to the rapid loss of biological diversity a sustainable and responsible dealing with flora and fauna is essential, not only in Germany but worldwide. With Germany as chair, the global community will discuss measures against the ongoing destruction of nature at the UN Convention on Biodiversity in the years 2008 to 2010.
Under the guidance of the Federal Press Office (BPA), six ministries were involved in the community tent of the Federal Government with own exhibition stands. For the BPA MC designed a "sustainable basket" with a selection of sustainably produced products. These are intended to show visitors that attentive shopping can contribute to environmental protection. A varied programme and stage events in the various tents completed the stand activities.

The BPA used the conference to inform of the national sustainable development strategy, the national programme on biodiversity and the integrated energy and climate program of the federal government. The Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety and the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection showed concrete measures to preserve and promote the natural diversity on national and international scale. It became clear that environmental, economic and social issues do not block each other, in the contrary the are going hand in hand.
