MEDIA CONSULTA und MTV putting Diversity in the Picture

TV-Spot promotes photo competition against discrimination among young people across Europe.

The EU information campaign, ‘For Diversity. Against Discrimination.’, realised by the pan-European communication Network MEDIA CONSULTA, has teamed up with the world’s largest youth channel, MTV, to create a pan-European competition to find the best photos depicting diversity. The competition aims to reach out to young people who may face discrimination, particularly when looking for a job. It also aims to raise awareness of new European legislation banning workplace discrimination on a range of grounds, including age, religion, sexual orientation, ethnic origin or disability. The competition was launched in November with a 30-second TV spot, produced by MTV in London together with MEDIA CONSULTA. The spot, aired across the entire European MTV Network, starts with a series of close ups of cameras of all shapes, sizes and styles and is accompanied by a soundtrack of cameras clicking. This is followed by images of a variety of different people taking photos with the cameras. A voiceover invites viewers to send in their photographs and to visit the competition website. Commenting on the launch of the competition, Vladimir Špidla, European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, said “Diversity is not only part of our everyday lives, it is also something to celebrate and enjoy. With the photo competition we want to reach out to young people who may face discrimination, particularly when looking for a job. Working with MTV helps us to reach this younger audience and we are looking forward to seeing the entries!” “MTV has a long history of highlighting issues relevant to young people, so we are excited to partner with the EU to help raise awareness about the importance of embracing diversity,” commented Cristian Jofre, Senior Vice President, Creative, MTV Networks International. To accompany the competition spot, a special website was created on which visitors can find more information about what the EU is doing to promote human diversity, the new legislation and the competition rules. A selection of the best pictures will feature in an exclusive MTV spot to be shown in 2006 as part of a new advertisement on combating discrimination in Europe. The overall winner will get the chance to travel round Europe with a new camera and take more photos of human diversity.
